Enjoy this free pattern for a multicolored crochet flower applique you can use for decorating hats, headbands or any other projects you wish. Do you have odds and ends of scrap yarn stashed away? If so, you should definitely grab this free crochet pattern — because this colorful little flower is a fantastic craft project for using up scrap yarn.
You’ll need four different colors of yarn in small amounts:
- Color A – Camel is color A in the sample flower.
- Color B – Baby green is color B in the sample flower.
- Color C – Yellow is color C in the sample flower.
- Color D – Blue is color D in the sample flower.
I crocheted my sample flower in worsted weight yarn, but you can try this pattern using any yarn weight you like. It would be lovely to work this flower with crochet thread if you happen to need an extra small flower for a project you’re working on. The worsted weight version is about right for decorating adult-sized hats, headbands and similar projects.
Choose an appropriate hook for the yarn or thread you want to use. If in doubt, check the yarn label for recommendations.
I used a size H / 5.0 mm hook to make the sample flower.
Gauge will vary depending on hook and yarn / thread used.
Finished size will vary depending on the materials you use. My sample flower measures approximately 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

How to Crochet This Flower:
Ch 4. Sl st to the first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Using color A, work 5 sc in ring. Sl st to join to beg of round.
Rnd 2: Using color B, work 2 sc in each sc. Sl st to join to beg of round.
Rnd 3: Using color C, work a sl st in each sc, all the way around.
For the last two rnds, flip the flower over so that you will be working into the back.
Rnd 4: For this round, work through 1 loop only of the sts from round 2; this will be the loop closest to you after you’ve flipped the work over. Attach color D. ch 6, skip 1 st, sc. (Ch 5, skip 1 st, sc.) Rep all the way around – 6 petals total.
Rnd 5: Into each flower petal work the following sequence: (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc.) Rep all the way around. Join with a sl st.
